The anime platform Oshi has unveiled a new key visual for GATE 2: Tides of Conflict, the upcoming anime sequel based on Takumi Yanai‘s light novel Gate: Jiei-tai Ka no Chi ni te, Kaku Tatakaeri (GATE: The Self-Defense Force Fights Like This in That Place). Several other important details about the project were also announced at the same time.
Ending Theme Selected Through a Global Contest
The team has announced a special collaboration with VOCALOID Collection Summer 2026, with the anime’s ending theme to be chosen from winning entries submitted to that event. Participants from around the world are welcome to enter; submissions must use Vocaloid-style vocal synthesis. The winning song will be re-recorded using a real vocalist and then selected through a further collaboration with Utaite Collection later in 2026.
Showcase at Anime Expo
The team has also announced that Oshi will have a dedicated booth at Anime Expo, where various merchandise and production materials will be on display for fans.
Production Team and Staff
This installment is directed by Toru Takahashi (previously: Orphen: The Revenge, Inari Kon Kon) at studio Studio M2. The anime screenplay is written by Tatsuhiko Urahata, who returns to the role he held on the first season. Character design is handled by Shigeru Fujita (known for: Monster, Pluto), with Yoshiaki Fujisawa returning as composer. The production is a collaboration between Kasagi Labo, Oshi, and GENCO.
The anime is scheduled to broadcast on television in 2027.
The Oshi Platform and Fan Participation
Currently in its soft launch phase, the Oshi platform is inviting fans to “actively participate” in the anime production process — describing itself as an ecosystem connecting creators, rights holders, and fans in one place, while offering exclusive behind-the-scenes content and global anime fan access.
Story and Series Background
After the mysterious “GATE” reopens, Japan’s Self-Defense Force continues its diplomatic and exploratory operations in the “Special Region” — a parallel world connected to ours. When American journalists are kidnapped in the stormy seas of this realm, Japan’s maritime special forces must launch a daring rescue operation at great risk. The new chapter of this military fantasy explores crisis management, diplomatic tensions, and extreme adventure in a world beyond imagination.
History of the GATE Series
Yanai originally published the story on the Arcadia web novel site between 2006 and 2009, before AlphaPolis released it as a 5-volume main series and 5 supplementary volumes between 2010 and 2015. The first TV anime season aired in 2015, with a second season following in 2016; Crunchyroll streamed both seasons, and Sentai Filmworks distributed them on home video.
The sequel light novel series GATE SEASON2 Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri spans 5 volumes, published from 2017 to 2020, along with 5 bunkoban volumes with illustrations by Kurojishi, released between 2020 and 2022.
The manga adaptation by Satoru Sao ran on the AlphaPolis website from 2011 through September 2025; AlphaPolis currently distributes the English-language edition of the manga, and Sao has since begun adapting the GATE 2 manga after completing the first arc. Additionally, Yanai wrote a prequel novel, GATE 0, in 2 volumes (released in November 2021 and August 2022). A manga adaptation by Reiji Saitaniya launched on the AlphaPolis website in March 2024 and is currently ongoing.
