At the Gundam Conference Spring 2026 livestream last Friday, Naohiro Ogata, executive director and producer at Bandai Namco Filmworks, officially announced that the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing franchise is currently in development on a “new visual project”.
When host Hisanori Yoshida pointed out that the term “visual project” could encompass anything from a 10-second clip to a 2-hour film or even a 50-episode series, Ogata replied simply: “We cannot reveal the specific format yet, but we can confirm it will be a substantial, full-length work.” The Japanese word eizō (映像) used in this announcement is a broad term covering all visual formats, including short event clips, home video, theatrical films, and television series.
New Manga Also Launching in August
Alongside this news, the Gundam Wing franchise also has a new manga titled Mobile Suit Gundam Wing 0.5 Point Half Preventer-7 launching in August. Sakura Asagi, the artist behind Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Blind Target, is handling the artwork, while the story is written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa, the original series screenwriter. This manga will serve as a bridge between Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz and the sequel novel Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop.
A Look Back at Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is the second entry in the Gundam Alternative Universe series by Bandai Namco Filmworks. The story unfolds as five young pilots, each piloting a Gundam mobile suit, descend to Earth on a covert mission targeting the militarized United Earth Sphere Alliance, relentlessly pressing forward to the very end. It was also the first Gundam series to air on television in the United States.
In A.C. 195, the space colonies launch Operation Meteor by sending Gundam mobile suits down to Earth to strike back against the United Earth Sphere Alliance, which controls them through military force. After Relena Darlian meets one of the pilots, Heero Yuy, she is drawn into a vortex of destiny, while the other four pilots — Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei — each meet by chance and are swept together by fate, entangled in the schemes of Treize Khushrenada, the secret leader of the shadowy organization OZ, who seizes the moment to purge the peacekeeping alliance and rise to a place in history.
The series first aired in 1995 and ran for a total of 49 episodes. In 2000 it became the first Gundam series to air on American television.
Endless Waltz and the Legacy of the Franchise
The series also spawned the sequel OVA Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, which debuted as a 3-episode OVA in 1997. All three episodes were later compiled and expanded into a theatrical film version in 1998, and in November 2000 Cartoon Network brought the series to American audiences as well.
