Masaaki Yuasa, a director widely celebrated for works such as DEVILMAN crybaby and The Tatami Galaxy, has been selected to curate a marquee anime series for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this fall.
Yuasa shared his feelings about the opportunity, saying:
“I am deeply honored to serve as the curator of this anime series for TIFF, and I look forward to meeting the Toronto audiences who have long been familiar with my name. As I compile the program, I feel a sense of excitement about revisiting works that have been pivotal to my imagination since my youth, alongside creators who are still pushing the boundaries of animation today.”
New Studio and Latest Project
In February 2025, Yuasa founded a new studio called ame pippin in partnership with ASMIK Ace, Aniplex, and CoMix Wave Films, serving as CEO and co-founder. The studio is currently preparing a co-production anime film between Japan and France titled Daisy’s Life, slated for 2026.
Masaaki Yuasa’s Career
Yuasa began his career in anime as a key animator on productions such as Doraemon: Nobita’s Animal Planet and The Legend of the Dog Warriors: The Hakkenden, before rising to episode director on multiple episodes of Crayon Shin-chan — he also contributed to the feature films in that franchise.
In 2013, he co-founded the studio Science SARU with Eunyoung Choi. Together they received an Annie Award nomination in 2014 for the Adventure Time episode “Food Chain.”
Notable directorial works by Yuasa include:
- Mind Game
- Kaiba
- Kemonozume
- The Tatami Galaxy
- Kick-Heart
- Ping Pong
- Lu over the wall
- DEVILMAN crybaby
- Ride Your Wave
- Japan Sinks: 2020
Yuasa stepped down as president of Science SARU in March 2020. His most recent directorial work is the animated musical film INU-OH, adapted from Hideo Furukawa’s novel Heike Monogatari: Inu-Oh no Maki, which premiered in Japan in May 2022.
