The official 4K revival of 「時をかける少女」 (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), the celebrated film by director Mamoru Hosoda, has been formally announced, along with an expansion to 14 additional theaters, bringing the nationwide total to 161 venues. The revival screening begins on Friday, July 3, 2026.
About the Film
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is adapted from the novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui and follows Makoto, a high school girl who gains the special ability to “time leap” — jumping back into the past. She uses this power to fix various events in her life, gradually discovering the true meaning of “irreplaceable time.”
When it first opened in July 2006, the film launched from just 6 theaters, but through rapid word-of-mouth it expanded to over 100 screens nationwide and ran for more than 40 weeks. It also won awards at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and has since received widespread international acclaim.
The 4K Revival Screening
Marking the film’s 20th anniversary, leading Japanese review platform Filmarks has launched this special revival project, utilizing the latest technology to sharpen picture quality while faithfully preserving the original color palette of the source film.
The remastering process focused on eliminating noise and color blur that appeared in the original print, bringing details of the cityscape, the summer sky, and various background elements into significantly sharper relief than ever before. The goal was not a simple color correction, but rather drawing out the full beauty the original images always contained — delivering an experience of a “fresh summer” on the big screen that feels even more immersive than before.
A 4K sample clip is available on Filmarks’ official YouTube channel and will be screened at participating theaters. Starting May 20, the team has also begun posting short video clips from the film on TikTok, with key scene highlights to be shared further in the future.
