June 6 of every year is celebrated as “The Day of Dread” (恐怖の日), a name derived from the number “666” in the New Testament — widely recognized as the “Number of the Beast,” a symbol of evil and absolute wickedness.
To mark this special day with its full air of “villainy,” the website Anime! Anime! has once again brought in “Akuya-Reijo” (悪役令嬢 — the Villainess Noblewoman) as its annual guest of honor.
From Villain to Protagonist
In the past, “Akuya-Reijo”-type characters were typically portrayed as arrogant and haughty rivals. However, in recent years a wave of stories placing these characters in the lead role has become enormously popular, greatly expanding and diversifying the image of the “Villainess Noblewoman.”
