Amara’s original web novel began serialization on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in September 2013. Takarajimasha published the first light novel volume with illustrations by Mai Okuma in April 2016. There are currently nine light novel volumes, with the latest released in November 2025, and the series has more than 1.4 million copies in circulation.

The story follows a fire-breathing dragon that loses its parents before it even opens its eyes and lives deep in the forest. One day, a mother cat happens to find it and decides to raise it. The cat family sees the little dragon as “a strange cat that can fly and breathe fire.” The dragon repays their kindness by protecting the cats in the forest. The cats affectionately call it “Winged Uncle,” while humans know it as the “cat dragon,” or Nekoryū.

The manga adaptation by Izumi Sasaki began on the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! website in September 2017 and moved to Manga Box in April 2020. The 13th compiled volume will be released on July 24.
