On May 24, a special stage greeting (舞台挨拶) was held to mark the revival screening of 「劇場版総集編 メイドインアビス【前編】旅立ちの夜明け」 (Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn, the Part 1 recap film) at Shinjuku Wald 9 cinema in Tokyo. All three voice actresses appeared on stage: Tamiya Miyu (Riko), Iso Mariya (Reg), and Izawa Shiori (Nanachi).

The Part 1 recap film’s revival run spans May 22 through June 4. The film is a compilation of the 2017 television anime first season, adapted from the original manga by Tsukushi Akihito, and originally screened in 2019.

Looking Back at Season 1

Izawa Shiori, who voices Nanachi — a character who does not appear in the first half — asked the audience whether anyone was watching Made in Abyss for the first time this run. When many hands went up, she quipped to herself, “So they don’t even know me yet (laughs).”

When asked about her memorable scenes from Part 1, Izawa picked the first scene where Reg promises Riko, “I will protect you even at the cost of my life,” and also touched on her feelings about their dynamic back when they were still children and alone — “Reg’s earnestness at that age fit the character so perfectly. It was a special moment that could only exist then.” Iso said she still remembers how young she was during the Season 1 recording sessions and how she instinctively reacted quickly and energetically to everything in Riko’s style, to the point where sound director Yamada Yo had to tell her “put in more feeling than that.” She admits it was technically very difficult at the time, but looking back she understands those scenes genuinely required that level of intensity. Tamiya added that Riko’s drive in those early days “completely matched the character — it was a perfect fit.”

Part 2 Screening and the Iconic Question: “Do You Want to Go Down to the Abyss?”

The revival run for 「劇場版総集編 メイドインアビス【後編】放浪する黄昏」 (Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight, the Part 2 recap) runs May 29 through June 11. Izawa explained that in Part 2 viewers will start seeing “the Abyss’s curse in its truest form,” and joked that after watching Part 1 they might want to go down but wondered whether anyone actually would.

The MC asked directly whether all three wanted to descend into the Abyss. All three looked at each other before answering — Tamiya said “If there’s a high-performance capsule that takes the strain on the way back up, I’d like to try…” Iso immediately shot back, “I absolutely cannot go! I spent two or three days abroad without eating Japanese food and I’m already desperate to drink miso soup.” Izawa laughed and added, “Probably impossible for me too (laughs).”

New Film Recording Complete — New Characters Revealed

All three announced that recording for the new film 「メイドインアビス 目覚める神秘」 (Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery) is already finished. Tamiya admitted she is more anxious than excited, worrying that the characters will “only” come from the well-known story fans already love — she even dreamed the sound director said “not yet” during test recording. Iso mentioned that in the later parts her character carries much more responsibility and her voice came out sounding more mature than planned at first, though she managed to handle it in the actual recording. She also excitedly revealed details about a new character who will appear in this film, saying she felt genuinely moved watching the final performance: “Wow, that’s really it!”

“Come Watch Bondrewd — the Wizard Is Back!”

In addition, it was announced that 「劇場版『メイドインアビス』-深き魂の黎明-」 (Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul) will hold a revival screening from August 7 through 20, coinciding with Japan’s Obon holiday season. When all three saw that date announced, they cheered together: “It’s holiday season! Come watch Bondrewd (ボンドルド)!” And Izawa immediately followed up with, “The Wizard is back! (laughs)” Both Tamiya and Iso then praised Bondrewd together: “He’s so good!!” — prompting applause and laughter from the audience.

Closing Message — Walking Together for Another 10 Years

In closing, Izawa told fans that the team uses the phrase “take care of your health” on set, and asked everyone to stay healthy so they can keep facing new adventures together. Iso said she is very happy to be presenting new story chapters to fans and hopes everyone will stay by their side for another good 10 years. Tamiya closed with heartfelt words: “Since we started recording Made in Abyss we have always said we want it to be a ‘lifelong work,’ and now most of my life as a voice actress belongs to this series. The fact that I can still say ‘Tamiya Miyu as Riko’ after finishing the new film is no small thing — it makes me so happy. Please take care of yourselves and come along with us on this journey.”
