Comments from Cast and Staff
Yonezu Kenshi (theme song artist)
“I wrote the song ‘Yodaka’ for this. Kingdom is like a grand festival that opens its gates wide without limits and invites everyone to celebrate together once a year. It feels like a true honor to be part of this project. I hope Shin keeps pushing straight ahead without stopping — good luck always.”
Sato Shinsuke (director)
“In ‘Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen,’ in the midst of the greatest war, each person’s struggle cannot be decided by simple right or wrong. When I heard ‘Yodaka’ for the first time after the film was completed, I was deeply moved by the wound and pain shared by those who must fight each other as enemies — the sadness of a war that cannot be easily resolved is embedded within the music. ‘Yodaka’ is the incarnation of a single spirit, and their voices will continue to resonate in the hearts of viewers after the film ends.”
Matsuhashi Shinzo (producer)
“I wanted Yonezu Kenshi to be the one to open a new world for Kingdom in this installment, no matter what. We shared the concept of the greatest battle in history between Qin and the six states, and I asked him to watch the footage and compose freely. I didn’t want my own narrow thoughts to confine his imagination. When I heard ‘Yodaka’ for the first time, I felt the ‘core’ of a person — calm and composed yet strong at the center of a vast, boundless world. That is what inspired the film’s title to change from ‘Shijo Saidai no Kessen (the greatest battle in history)’ to ‘Tamashii no Kessen (Battle of Souls)’ — this song has that kind of power.”
The film Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen, based on the original manga by Hara Yasuhisa published by Shueisha, opens on July 17, 2026.
