It has been announced that «えんとつ町のプペル» (Poupelle of Chimney Town) is being adapted into a live-action (Live-Action) short film in collaboration with AI technology company KamikAI. The work will receive its world premiere screening at the awards ceremony of the ショートショート フィルムフェスティバル & アジア (Short Short Film Festival & Asia — SSFF & ASIA) 2026, to be held on June 10, 2026.
About Poupelle of Chimney Town
Poupelle of Chimney Town is a picture book produced under the supervision of Nishino Akihiro as producer, using a collaborative work-sharing system among more than 33 creators, covering illustration, coloring, and design. It took four years to create, with part of its funding raised through crowdfunding, supported by believers in the project’s vision.
In the picture book world, reaching 5,000 copies sold is considered a success — yet this work has achieved a remarkable cumulative print run of 800,000 copies. It was also adapted into an animated film in December 2020, directed by Hiroto Yusuke and produced by STUDIO4°C under Nishino’s screenplay and creative supervision. That film won the Japan Academy Prize and has been seen by more than 1,960,000 people in Japan. Beyond that, it has been adapted into kabuki, ballet, and a musical as well. Most recently, in March 2026, a sequel to the animated film titled «映画 えんとつ町のプペル ~約束の時計台~» entered theaters.
