魔法の姉妹ルルットリリィ (Mahō no Shimai Lulutto Lily), the sixth work in the “Pierrot Magical Girl” series, has entered the closing stretch of its first-cour climax after episode 9 aired on May 31.

Episode 9 Synopsis: “Episode 09: A Gloomy Saturday”

In this episode, younger sister Fū Nonoyama, who transforms into “Konpeito Lily,” and older sister Rui Nonoyama, who transforms into “Mashu Lulu,” have both been living as idols. The mood shifts, however, when a rift begins to open between the sisters, and the story turns its focus toward Fū and Rui as actual “sisters” rather than as idols.

Rui once became seriously ill and drifted away from singing, which she loved. No matter how much Fū begged her, Rui refused to sing. But after watching Lily’s debut stage, her passion was reignited so strongly that she went to apply to “Production Once More” by herself. Because of this, Lulu (Rui) sees Lily as the “ideal senior” she admires.

Because the rules forbid revealing anything about magical powers, neither Rui nor Fū knows that the other is Lulu or Lily. As a result, Lulu continues speaking politely to Lily, unaware that Lily is actually her own younger sister.

A Warm Moment Between Lily and Lulu

While Lulu is alone watching the production office, Lily walks in, and the two have a one-on-one conversation. The cheerful Lily tells Lulu not to be so tense and explains that what has always driven her is the desire to make “someone important from childhood” happy. Lulu then confesses, “If I had not met Lily-san, I would never have been able to change. Lily-san opened the door for me.” Fans responded warmly, saying, “The conversation between these two pairs is so good,” and “Rui admires Fū, and Fū admires Lulu. That is wonderful.”

A Rift Between Sisters

When Fū returns home and sees Rui watching a program she appears in, she is immediately happy, since Rui rarely watches TV. Fū asks, “Are you a Lily fan?” and Rui admits that she admires Lily very much. Fū, who alone knows the truth, smiles shyly, prompting fans to say, “Fū-chan looking so happy is really cute.”

But the warm mood ends when Fū says, “I want to hear you sing again,” while comparing Rui to Lily. Rui replies, “I cannot sing like that.” Fū, knowing that she herself is Lily, says, “You are even better at singing than Lily,” but Rui, who knows Lily only as a fellow idol, does not believe her and feels that Fū does not understand anything. The two end up in conflict.

Fans voiced concern, saying, “Why is there still distance between such a good older sister and her younger sister?” and “It hurts that both of them know different sides of the truth.”

Magic Brings Them Together

After their argument, both Rui and Fū try to release their “gloomy” feelings through magic. Rui wishes to “see something bright and sparkling,” while Fū wishes for “this tightness to go away.” Without realizing it, their magic activates at the same time, guiding “Lily” and “Lulu” into an accidental meeting amid a crowd, led by road closure signs and traffic lights influenced by magic.

In their idol forms, the two listen to each other’s worries, and Rui realizes, “Back then… I was angry at myself.” When she returns home, Rui goes to Fū and says, “I’m sorry,” allowing the sisters to reconcile at last.

Fans were highly satisfied with the episode, commenting, “The fact that they have to transform before they can truly open up is exactly what this series has been expressing all along,” “These sisters are awkward, but that makes them so cute,” and “They are listening to each other’s problems without realizing it. It is strange, but adorable.”
