The Studio Ghibli animated film Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓) is set to return to Netflix in Japan on July 15, 2025, marking the title’s second domestic streaming run on the platform.
A Global Hit Now Back in Japan
Netflix first launched Grave of the Fireflies on September 16, 2024, exclusively across more than 190 countries and regions outside Japan. The film debuted at No. 7 on the Netflix Global TOP 10 (Non-English Films) chart in its opening week.
The film then made its Netflix Japan debut in 2025 — a first for any Studio Ghibli title on the platform domestically — with support for subtitles in 33 languages and dubbing in 10 languages. An audio guide for visually impaired viewers was also included, narrated in Japanese by Yasuda Akihiro (SUPER EIGHT) and in English by Patrick Harlan (Pakkun Makkun).
Special Activities for the Return Streaming
This second Japanese run is accompanied by a series of events centered on the theme “Watch, Feel, Think, and Express.”
- A children’s essay-writing workshop will be held on July 11, 2025, ahead of the streaming launch.
- A campaign on note.com runs from July 15 through August 31, 2025. Users who post articles with the hashtags #火垂るの墓 and #Netflix感想文 will be entered into a draw to win Netflix merchandise and a copy of the book Isao Takahata and “Grave of the Fireflies” — Deciphering the “Phantom Script” and “7 Concept Notebooks”, with five winners selected in total.
- A school screening support program allows schools to apply via an online form. Those granted permission by publisher Shinchosha will receive free Netflix viewing codes for classroom screenings.
About the Film
Grave of the Fireflies is based on the novel by Nosaka Akiyuki and follows Seita, a 14-year-old boy, and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko, as they struggle to survive after losing their parents during wartime. The film was written and directed by Isao Takahata, produced by Studio Ghibli, and originally released in 1988.
