ปกมังงะ Uzumaki ของจุนจิ อิโต้

The July issue of Shogakukan’s Big Comic Original Zōkan magazine, released on June 12, carried the final chapter of Masaru Satō‘s novelization of Junji Ito‘s classic horror manga Uzumaki. A compiled novel edition is slated to ship at a later date.

A Six-Year Serialization

Satō launched the novelization in Big Comic Original Zōkan back in February 2019, making this a serialization that ran for over six years before reaching its conclusion.

About the Original Manga

Ito’s Uzumaki manga originally ran from 1998 to 1999, following the residents of a small town plagued by a series of increasingly disturbing supernatural events all connected to the shape of a spiral. Viz Media released the manga in three collected volumes between 2007 and 2008, and later published an omnibus edition.

Film and Anime Adaptations

The manga was previously adapted into a live-action horror film in 2000, starring Eriko Hatsune and Fan Fhi.

More recently, an anime adaptation premiered on Adult Swim‘s Toonami programming block in September 2024, concluding in October of the same year. Viz Media released the anime digitally with English audio on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes Store, Microsoft Store, and VUDU, and the series is also available on the Max streaming service.

About the Author

Masaru Satō is a novelist and former senior analyst at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He became a fan of Junji Ito after spotting someone reading Uzumaki on a train and tracking down a copy for himself. Satō also wrote the original story for the manga Yūkoku no Rasputin, which Ito illustrated. Uzumaki marks Satō’s debut as a novelist.
