The speculative fiction manga Fool Night by Kasumi Yasuda, currently serialized in Big Comic Superior (Shogakukan), has been officially announced for an anime adaptation. The series will be co-produced by Sunrise and Shaft and is set to stream exclusively worldwide on Netflix in 2026. A teaser visual, teaser PV, and a commemorative illustration by Yasuda have all been released alongside the announcement.

A Dark, Oxygen-Starved Future

Fool Night is set on a far-future Earth where thick clouds permanently block out sunlight, leaving the world locked in perpetual cold and darkness. Most plant life has withered away, and humanity teeters on the edge of oxygen deprivation. To survive, a technology known as Tenka (転花) was developed — a procedure that embeds seeds into the bodies of the terminally ill, transforming them into living plants called Reika (霊花) that produce oxygen for the living.

The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man crushed by poverty and stripped of hope, who decides to undergo the Tenka procedure despite the fierce objections of his childhood friend Yomiko Horai. After the operation, Toshiro unexpectedly awakens a unique ability, drawing him into a series of unforeseen conflicts and upheavals.

Comments from the Creator and Cast

Kasumi Yasuda shared that the seed of Fool Night was planted by the image of potted plants lined up in a sterile office. He admitted to building the story without a clear plan, letting it grow organically — and was moved that it has finally reached an anime adaptation, thanking readers worldwide for their support.

Kouki Uchiyama noted that Toshiro’s emotional journey is deeply complex, and that he challenged himself with different approaches each episode to faithfully convey the character’s inner shifts.

Minako Kotobuki said she was captivated by the world of Fool Night and director Yukawa’s sensibility from the very audition. She described Yomiko as someone who appears ordinary on the surface — she loves eating — but whose inner emotional landscape is subtly warped by her work as a Tenka official. Kotobuki said she was careful not to let those nuances slip through the cracks in her performance.

Director Atsuyuki Yukawa revealed that the project began when he — a self-described former recluse — submitted a proposal, and that a remarkable coincidence brought Sunrise and Shaft together, eventually leading to him being recommended for the director’s chair. He said that rather than overexplaining the story’s many layers, he chose to trust the audience and focus on sculpting time with care — invoking Tarkovsky’s idea that cinema is the art of sculpting time. He assured fans that every member of the team is doing outstanding work.
