The lily flower — known in Japanese as yuri (百合) — is celebrated as the birth flower of June and a symbol of early summer’s arrival. In the world of anime and manga, “yuri” also names the genre depicting intimate relationships between female characters, spanning everything from romantic love to deep friendship, trust, and unbreakable bonds.
To mark the season, Anime!Anime! ran an online poll asking readers: “What is your favourite yuri anime?” The survey ran from 4 to 11 June and collected responses from 396 participants. The gender split was approximately 60% male and 40% female. By age group, roughly 20% of respondents were 19 or younger, about 40% were in their 20s, and around 30% were in their 30s.

🥇 1st Place — A Fan-Favourite Robot Anime
The top spot went to a well-known mecha (robot) anime, a result that surprised many and demonstrated that the yuri genre is far from confined to romance titles — it thrives equally in action and sci-fi series.
🥈 2nd Place — Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road (処刑少女の生きる道)
Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road (also known internationally as Executioner and Her Way of Life) secured second place. This dark fantasy series won fans over with its nuanced and emotionally charged relationship between its female leads.
🥉 3rd Place — Chō Kaguya-hime! (超かぐや姫！)
Chō Kaguya-hime! rounded out the top three, praised by voters for its heartfelt and expressive portrayal of a female-female relationship.
Places 4–10 and Reader Comments
Beyond the top three, the poll revealed a wide variety of yuri titles beloved by the community, each offering its own distinct take on female relationships — from tender romance to steadfast friendship and bonds forged through hardship.
The results highlight just how broadly the yuri genre resonates with anime fans of all genders, and underline its continued growth and diversification within the anime industry.
