The staff behind the television anime adaptation of Satsuki Nakamura‘s light novel series Though I Am an Inept Villainess (Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga – Sūgū Chōso Torikae Den) began streaming a new pre-broadcast promotional video on Sunday. The video, subtitled in English, Traditional Chinese, and Korean, announces and previews the series’ ending theme song.
Ending Theme: “Shooting Star” by Rokudenashi
The ending theme is titled “Shooting Star” (Hōkiboshi), performed by Rokudenashi. Singer-songwriter Eve composed both the lyrics and music for the track. The opening theme, “Sunny,” is performed by milet.
Story
Set in a kingdom inspired by historical China, five clans each send a maiden to compete for the position of imperial consort — with only one destined to become empress. Kou Reirin, the delicate and beautiful “butterfly” of the imperial court, seems all but certain to wed the crown prince. However, during the dazzling Lantern Festival, the “court rat” Shu Keigetsu attacks her and swaps their bodies, leaving Reirin to wake up in the dungeons. Rather than despair, Reirin finds that her new, sturdier body means not even the threat of execution can hold her back.

Mitsue Yamazaki (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun) is directing at Dōga Kōbō. Yoshiko Nakamura (Detective Conan: Zero’s Tea Time, The Helpful Fox Senko-san) is handling series composition, and Ai Kikuchi (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, New Game!, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie) is the character designer. Yukari Hashimoto is composing the score, with sound production by Tohokushinsha Film Corporation.
Broadcast and Streaming
The anime premieres on TV Tokyo and its affiliates on July 12 at 11:45 p.m. JST. The premiere was originally scheduled for April but was pushed back due to production delays. Netflix will stream the series in Asia from July 12, while Crunchyroll will carry it across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent. Hulu is also set to debut the series on July 12 with both English subtitles and a dub.
Source Material
Nakamura’s light novel series, illustrated by YukiKana, launched under Ichijinsha in December 2020. A manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji began simultaneously in Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Zero-Sum. The 12th light novel volume was published on March 31. Seven Seas Entertainment, which publishes the English editions under the title Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court, will release light novel volume 11 on September 22 and manga volume 9 on August 4.
