About the Series

The first anime season premiered in April 2025 and streams exclusively on Amazon Prime Video worldwide. Sagazaki launched the original light novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in November 2020; Square Enix publishes the volumes with illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima, and J-Novel Club holds the English license.

The story follows Beryl Gardinant, a self-described “humble old man” who runs a small sword dojo in a rural backwater. His quiet life is upended when a renowned former student arrives with stunning news: Beryl has been appointed special instructor to the knights of the Liberion Order. Heading to the capital, he reunites with former pupils who have become elite knights, a top-ranked wizard, and a max-rank adventurer — yet they all still seek his guidance, much to his bewilderment.

A manga adaptation by Kazuki Satō has been running in Akita Shoten’s Dokodemo Young Champion magazine since August 2021, with Yen Press releasing it in English. Two spinoff manga are also in publication: Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru Gaiden: Hajimari no Mahō Kenshi, drawn by Megumu Soramichi on Square Enix’s Manga UP! service (launched November 2024), and Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru Gaiden: Ryūsōken no Kiseki, drawn by Sasami Hazama in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine (launched February 2025), which follows Surena Lysandra on her path to becoming a Black Rank adventurer.
