Set in Arboral Year 1294, the world is dominated by nine colossal towers called the Spires—remnants of an advanced lost civilization brimming with powerful secrets that rival nations desperately seek to control. Luca, a bugler in a mercenary company, dreams of leaving the battlefield behind to become a maestro. But as one of the enigmatic Branch-hexed, gifted with the strange ability to see the sound of his instrument, he finds himself reluctantly pulled into a war of epic proportions.
Left for dead after a battle, Luca is rescued by the mysterious Pontiff, who reveals that Luca is not alone in possessing unusual powers. The Pontiff has assembled a special team of Branch-hexed individuals to challenge rival empires—and Luca soon discovers that his gift is not an escape from war, but instead makes him a muse of massacre.
