The official website for the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) anime has released a new trailer for its upcoming theatrical film, revealing the full title, cast details, and opening date.
Title and Release Date
The film is officially titled Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bōhi no Hihō (The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress’ Treasure) and is set to open in Japanese cinemas on December 11. The story is a brand-new original written specifically for the film by the light novel series’ author, Natsu Hyūga.
Cast
Returning leads Aoi Yūki as Maomao and Takeo Ōtsuka as Jinshi reprise their roles. Joining them is Mariya Ise, who has been newly cast as Mu Qing (English romanization not yet confirmed).
Story
The film follows Maomao and Jinshi as they journey to the hometown of a concubine who died five years ago in the imperial harem, tasked with returning her remains to her homeland. Along the way, they encounter pirates, hidden treasures, the secret behind the Empress’ remains, and a mysterious boy who holds the key to the entire story.
Season 3 and Series Background
A third television anime season has also been announced, with its first cour set to premiere in October 2026 and its second cour following in April 2027.
The first anime season debuted in October 2023 and ran for two consecutive cours, while the second season launched in January 2025 on Nippon TV’s FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block, also spanning two cours. Both seasons — including English dubs — are available on Crunchyroll.

Natsu Hyūga began serializing the original story on the “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” website in October 2011. Shufunotomo started publishing the print novel series with illustrations by Touko Shino in August 2014. A manga adaptation by Nekokurage has been running in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan since May 2017. Square Enix Manga & Books publishes both the manga and novel in English, while J-Novel Club handles the digital English novel releases.
