Sega took the stage at Anime Expo 2026 on Saturday to announce Sonic the Hedgehog: Memories and Beyond, a short animated film created to celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary. A sneak peek video was shown at the event, with the full short set to debut this fall.
Story
In the film, Dr. Eggman hatches a new sinister plot: upgrading Metal Sonic into the ultimate fighting machine by stealing Sonic’s life-data and harnessing the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic and his friends must draw on the bonds of friendship forged throughout their many adventures in order to stand a chance against this supercharged foe.

The Anime Expo panel celebrating 35 years of Sonic the Hedgehog featured members of the Sonic art and animation team, including Takashi Iizuka, Austin Keys, and Jasmin Hernandez.

The live-action Sonic the Hedgehog 4 film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 19, 2027, with a fifth film also in the works for 2028.
