The MAO anime, based on the manga by legendary creator Rumiko Takahashi, will receive its English dub debut on August 24, according to an announcement made at Viz Media’s Anime Expo panel.
Story
MAO is described as an “era-spanning supernatural adventure.” When Nanoka travels back in time to a supernatural early 20th-century Japan, she is reluctantly rescued by aloof exorcist MAO from the jaws of a grotesque yokai. Back in the present, she discovers she has gained incredible new abilities, and returns to the past seeking answers — only to get drawn into MAO’s investigation of a series of gruesome murders. She eventually learns that MAO is cursed by a cat demon named Byoki, and so is his sword: anyone other than MAO who wields it is doomed. But when MAO’s life is on the line, Nanoka grabs the blade and swings.

The anime premiered on NHK General on April 4 and is running for two consecutive cours without a break. Its second cour kicked off with episode 14 last Saturday. Hulu streams the series in the United States, while Disney+ carries it in Canada, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand.
