Two major Japanese productions — the anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle and the live-action film Exit 8 — have both received nominations at the Critics Choice Awards. Winners will be announced on August 6.

Exit 8: Ninomiya Kazunari Nominated for Best Actor

Singer and actor Kazunari Ninomiya, who stars in Exit 8, has been nominated for Best Actor in a Superhero Movie. The film marks his first collaboration with writer-director Genki Kawamura, previously known as producer on your name., Fireworks, Suzume, and Should We See it from the Side or the Bottom? Ninomiya’s past film credits include the live-action Letters from Iwo Jima, Ōoku, Gantz, and Assassination Classroom.

Exit 8 is based on an indie game in which a player becomes trapped in a looping underground passageway at a subway station. To escape to “Exit 8,” the player must keep walking while carefully watching for anomalies that signal danger.

The film opened in Japan in August 2025, debuting at #2 and selling 672,000 tickets in its first three days for 960,867,600 yen (about US$6.46 million) — the highest three-day opening for a live-action film in Japan in 2025. Its cumulative gross reached 4,899,067,900 yen (about US$32.10 million) as of October. Film distributor NEON — U.S. distributor of Oscar-winning films Parasite and Anora — brought the film to North American theaters.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Breaks Box Office Records

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle opened in Japan on July 18, 2025, and screened for 266 days before closing on April 9. It sold a cumulative 27,455,968 tickets and earned 40,200,019,000 yen (about US$252.5 million) in Japan alone.

On September 15, 2025 — its 60th day in Japanese theaters — the film became the second highest-grossing film of all time at the Japanese box office, surpassing Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s 2001 classic Spirited Away.

Globally, the film sold 98,520,310 tickets for a total of 117,917,539,329 yen (about US$740.5 million). It also became the first Japanese film ever to gross over 100 billion yen (about US$644 million) worldwide, a milestone it crossed by November 16.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned US$718,491,762 worldwide in 2025, ranking it as the seventh top-grossing film worldwide for the year. It was also the #2 animated film in the U.S. in 2025 (ranking #18 overall with US$134,487,320) and the #3 animated film worldwide in 2025.

The film first opened in the U.S. and Canada on September 12, before returning to North American theaters on March 6. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment also brought the film to ScreenX multi-projection screens in North America for the first time.

Crunchyroll will begin streaming Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle worldwide outside of Japan and Mainland China on July 28. The film will also be available for digital purchase on the same date via Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, and Fandango.
