The official website for Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island), the first theatrical anime adaptation of Nagano’s Chiikawa manga, has announced two additional cast members. Momoka Terasawa will voice Hitoha, and Sayumi Suzushiro will voice Futaba — a pair of islanders that Chiikawa and friends encounter during their adventure.
Story and Source Material
The film is based on the manga arc that Nagano serialized on X (formerly Twitter) from March to November 2023, widely known among fans as the “Siren Arc” or “Island Arc.”
The story kicks off when Chiikawa and Hachiware are enjoying a quiet moment together, only to be interrupted by a rabbit with a flyer stuck to its face. The flyer turns out to be an invitation to a “special island,” promising easy hunts with great rewards and mouth-watering limited-edition treats like island ramen and sweets — all practically free. Enticed by the offer, Chiikawa and friends decide to make the trip. Rakko, suspicious of the flyer, tags along. What exactly awaits them on the island?

Series creator Nagano is credited for the original story and has also written the film’s screenplay. Kei Oikawa — known for directing all three seasons of Uma Musume Pretty Derby, Hinamatsuri, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!, and My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax — is directing at Cygames Pictures under Nagano’s supervision. QTORY inc. is managing production, and TOHO is handling distribution.

Release and Series Background
The film opens in Japan on July 24.
Nagano originally launched the manga on X under the title Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu in January 2020. The TV anime premiered in April 2022, initially airing every Friday on Fuji TV’s morning program Mezamashi Terebi, before expanding to twice-weekly broadcasts (Tuesdays and Fridays) in April 2023. A new anime series launched in July 2025, following the conclusion of the previous series’ regular run in April 2025. Sentai Filmworks holds the license and streams the anime with English subtitles on HIDIVE.
