To mark the 40th anniversary of the OVA series Shonan Bakusozoku (湘南爆走族), based on the manga by Satoshi Yoshida, Toei Video has launched a free streaming campaign on its official YouTube channel. The celebration also includes a special staff event in Tokyo this December and a reprint Blu-ray BOX release.
All 12 OVAs Available Free from July 23 to August 20
The free streaming runs from July 23, 2026 through August 20, 2026 (until 17:59 JST), split into four rotating windows. The campaign covers all 12 OVA installments produced over a 14-year span through 1999, released in the following schedule:
- July 23 – July 30 (17:59 JST) — Episodes 1–3: Nokosareta Hashiriya-tachi / 1/5 Lonely Night / 10 Ounce no Kizuna
- July 30 – August 6 (17:59 JST) — Episodes 4–6: Hurricane Riders / Aozameta Akatsuki / GT380 History
- August 6 – August 13 (17:59 JST) — Episodes 7–9: Supokon Mad Special / Akai Hoshi no Densetsu / Ore to Omae no Good Luck!
- August 13 – August 20 (17:59 JST) — Episodes 10–12: From Samantha / Kenka no Hanasaku Shugaku Ryoko / Kanketsu-hen: Sakurafubuki no Sotsugyoshiki
Memorial Event on December 5, 2026
A special event titled “Nakano × Suginami × Toshima Anime & Manga Fes 2026 — Nakano Ward Presents: Toei Animation 70th × V-Anime 40th — Shonan Bakusozoku Memorial” will be held on December 5, 2026 at Nakano ZERO Small Hall in Tokyo (doors open 17:00, show starts 17:30). Confirmed guests include:
- Satoshi Yoshida — original manga author
- Takashi Saijo — character designer and animation director
- Noriyo Sasaki — assistant director / episode director / director
- Naoko Takahashi — producer
The event will offer an in-depth look at the production history of the OVA series, alongside a retrospective on the history of Toei Animation (celebrating its own 70th anniversary) and Toei Video’s OVA catalog. 450 attendees will be invited free of charge via lottery.
Best Episode Vote and Fan Art Contest
A dedicated website is now accepting fan votes for a Best Episode poll, as well as fan art submissions. The winning episode will be screened at the December event alongside the results announcement. Fan art entries will be judged by animation director Takashi Saijo, with standout works recognized through the “Saijo Takashi Award.”
Three randomly selected Best Episode voters will receive a reprint Blu-ray BOX signed by Satoshi Yoshida, while the Saijo Takashi Award winner will receive a reprint Blu-ray BOX signed by Takashi Saijo. Full submission details are available on the official special site.
Reprint Blu-ray BOX on Sale December 2, 2026
The reprint Blu-ray BOX goes on sale December 2, 2026, bundled with the complete storage box and booklet originally produced for the 2014 release. Early pre-orders come with a set of 12 VHS jacket design postcards. Pre-orders are open now through the Toei Video online shop.
