Katsushi Murakami, a veteran mechanical designer whose work shaped generations of anime and Japanese toys, has passed away at the age of 83. He was born on September 23, 1942, in Gifu, Japan.
Anime Career
Murakami served as mechanical designer on a wide range of anime titles, including Shin Tetsujin 28, Gold Lightan – The Golden Warrior, Machine Robo: Battle Hackers, Video Warrior Laserion, Reideen the Brave, Gekisō! Rubenkaiser, Kishin Taisen Gigantic Formula, and Space Adventure Cobra. He also designed vehicles for the F-Zero Falcon Densetsu anime series.
Beyond mechanical design, Murakami is credited as a planner on three additional productions: 3×3 Eyes, Little Twins, and Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: The Movie.
The Legacy of Chogokin
Murakami joined Bandai in 1961 and later worked for its subsidiary Popy. He became best known for designing the celebrated Chogokin line of die-cast robot toys — a name derived from the fictional super-alloy used to build the iconic mecha Mazinger Z. His toy design work extended to tokusatsu and sentai live-action franchises as well, most notably Kamen Rider.
Murakami’s contributions left an indelible mark on Japanese pop culture, and tributes have poured in from fans and industry figures alike following the news of his passing.
