August 8 is celebrated in Japan as “Laughter Day,” a date chosen for its phonetic resemblance to the sound of laughing (“ha-ha-ha” = 8-8). To mark the occasion, Anime!Anime! asked its readers: “Which anime makes you laugh the most?” The poll ran from July 18 to 25, 2026, collecting 108 responses. Respondents were roughly 55% male and 45% female; the largest age group was people in their 30s (about 35%), followed by those 19 and under (about 30%).

No. 1: Gintama — Six Years at the Top

Gintama claimed first place with approximately 25% of the vote, extending its consecutive winning streak to six years. Based on Hideaki Sorachi’s manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, the series follows odd-jobs man Gintoki Sakata and his friends in an Edo-period Japan opened up to aliens. The film Shin Gekijouban Gintama -Yoshiwara Daienjo- was also released in 2026.

Voters praised the show’s enormous comedic range — sharp parody, adult humor, topical gags, and fourth-wall-breaking meta-commentary — all balanced by Shinpachi’s rapid-fire straight-man retorts. One reader wrote: “Anything goes, from risqué parody to behind-the-scenes meta jokes. The combination of wild gags and precise tsukkomi creates a comedy anime unlike any other — proof of what happens when adults decide to mess around in earnest.” Fans also singled out favorite episodes, including the recurring segments where the Shogun gets humiliated and the episode where Katsura attempts to get a driver’s license.

No. 2: Bungou Stray Dogs Wan! — A Big Jump from Unranked

Bungou Stray Dogs Wan! leaped from outside the rankings last year all the way to second place. The series is a spin-off manga that reimagines the cast of Bungou Stray Dogs as chibi (super-deformed) characters, depicting the chaotic everyday lives of the Armed Detective Agency and Port Mafia members.

Readers enjoyed seeing usually serious characters like Dazai let loose in comedic situations. “The gap between how intense they normally are and how they boke and tsukkomi over trivial things is hilarious,” one voter noted. The “all-stars together” dynamic — bringing characters from rival factions into the same scenes — was also highlighted as a major draw. The TV anime’s second season began airing in July, which likely contributed to the series’ surge in the rankings.

No. 3: Osomatsu-san — Into the Top Three

Osomatsu-san climbed from a tied fifth place last year into the top three. The comedy series, based on Fujio Akatsuka’s classic manga Osomatsu-kun, depicts the sextuplets from the original story as unemployed adult NEETs. The TV anime first aired in 2015, and its fourth season concluded in June this year.

Voters loved the escalating chaos that ensues whenever the six brothers — each with a wildly different personality — are together, along with the show’s blend of parody and dark humor. One reader recommended the “buzz-cut episode” from Season 4, adding: “They fight and drag each other down constantly, but there’s genuine brotherly love underneath it all.”

Honorable Mentions

  • Hime-sama “Goumon” no Jikan desu — “Despite the scary title, the ‘torture’ is anything but — it’s a wholesome comedy where the demon king’s army turns out to be the nicest bunch around.”
  • Masuda Kousuke Gekijou Gag Manga Biyori — “Surreal characters, unique wordplay, and a breakneck pace that strips away all filler. Completely addictive — you can laugh without thinking at all.”
  • Chibi Godzilla no Gyakushuu — “The gags get stronger with every new character. Chibi Battra, introduced in Season 4, turned out to be an ojou-sama type — totally unexpected! The voice cast is incredible too.”
  • Let’s Go Kaiki-gumi — “Mecha-ko and the ghosts keep going in completely the wrong direction trying to scare people, while the protagonist — who is six times more easily frightened than a normal person — delivers the best reactions. My top pick this season.”
