The final cour of the TV anime BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War — The Conflict (-禍進譚-) continues to generate massive buzz. Episode 45, titled “DEFEND YOU,” which aired on August 22, 2026, set social media ablaze with two major moments: Orihime Inoue’s self-sacrificing charge and the debut of an anime-exclusive new form for Ichigo.

About BLEACH

BLEACH is a sword-and-battle action manga by Tite Kubo, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The story follows Kurosaki Ichigo, an ordinary teenager who acquires the powers of a Soul Reaper and becomes a “Substitute Soul Reaper,” only to be drawn into the upheavals of Soul Society — the realm where departed souls gather. The TV anime launched in October 2004, has produced over 360 episodes, and spawned four theatrical films. The final series, BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, began airing in October 2022 and has won widespread praise for its stunning animation and anime-original scenes.

⚠️ Spoiler warning: The following contains plot details from episode 45.

Previously: Episode 44 and Hitsugaya’s Adult Form

Last week’s episode 44 made waves with the Bankai reveals of Zaraki Kenpachi and Hitsugaya Tōshirō. Hitsugaya’s transformation from his boyish form into a fully grown adult body drew an outpouring of emotion from fans, many of whom had waited years to see the moment animated.

Episode 45: Ichigo Awakens His Hollow Power — and Orihime’s Sacrifice

With the destruction of all three worlds looming, Ichigo confronts Yhwach inside the Wahrwelt castle and awakens the dormant Hollow power within himself. In his half-Hollowfied state, he unleashes “Ōko no Senkō” (王虚の閃光) — a technique that fuses his Getsuga ability with Hollow power — yet it still fails to reach Yhwach, forcing Ichigo to confront the limits of his strength.

The scene that truly shook viewers, however, belonged to Orihime Inoue. In the heat of battle, Orihime throws herself in harm’s way to protect Ichigo, screaming and collapsing in a bloodied state. The raw, painful imagery flooded social media with reactions: “Orihime!!!” and “That was basically a suicide charge…”

The Ending Title Changes to “LIFE TO DEFEND YOU”

Mirroring the gravity of the scene, the episode’s ending title was altered from the usual “DEFEND YOU” to “LIFE TO DEFEND YOU.” The official account released the new title alongside Orihime’s words: “Bye-bye, Kurosaki-kun… I’ll take it all for you!” — a line that moved many fans to tears.

“Tsukishima-san” Trends Despite Not Appearing

Curiously, “月島さん” (Tsukishima-san) trended on social media even though the character does not appear in this episode. Tsukishima Shūkurō is a villain from the Fullbring arc who wields a bookmark-shaped sword called “Book of the End” — its ability allows him to insert himself into the “past” of anyone he cuts, effectively rewriting their memories. Because of this power, he has become a beloved internet meme among BLEACH fans: whenever something extraordinary happens, fans joke that “Tsukishima-san must be behind it.” This episode was no exception, with fans crying out, “Tsukishima-san, do something!” and “This is exactly when we need Tsukishima-san!”

Anime-Exclusive Debut: “Chained Ichigo”

The episode’s climax delivered one final shock: Ichigo, in his half-Hollowfied state, activates his Bankai, transforming both his Zanpakutō and his appearance into an entirely new form — “Chained Ichigo” (血鎖の一護). This form was designed and named by original creator and anime general supervisor Tite Kubo himself, making it an anime-exclusive addition to the canon. Fan reactions ranged from stunned disbelief — “A Bankai that’s not in the manga… seriously!?” — to pure excitement: “Half-Hollowfied plus Bankai is the hottest thing ever!” and “Chained Ichigo looks absolutely incredible!”
