The theatrical film Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (映画ちいかわ 人魚の島のひみつ) has crossed the coveted 10 billion yen (100 oku yen) mark at the Japanese box office. The milestone was announced on the film’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on August 23, 2026 — just 30 days after the film opened in cinemas on July 24.
From a Twitter Manga to a National Phenomenon
Chiikawa is a manga series by illustrator Nagano, which began serialization on X (Twitter) in 2020. Following the everyday lives of Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and their friends — a blend of cheerful, bittersweet, and occasionally tough moments — the series has captivated readers of all ages. It earned a Hall of Fame induction at the Japan Character Grand Prix, and the anime adaptation, which began airing in 2022, has accumulated over 500 million views on YouTube, drawing fans from across the globe.
The “Siren Arc” Takes Center Stage
The film adapts the so-called “Siren Arc”, one of the most distinctive and beloved long-form storylines in the series. It is directed by Oikawa Kei and produced by studio Saipiku, known for its high-quality animation work including the action sequences in Uma Musume Pretty Derby: New Generation’s Gate. The entire production was supervised by original creator Nagano, bringing the adventure to life with sweeping music and dynamic visuals.
A Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
The film launched to massive numbers, drawing 1,508,538 admissions and earning ¥2,240,333,500 in its opening three-day weekend, landing at No. 1 on the weekly box office chart. Momentum has been sustained in part by a series of exclusive entry bonuses for theater-goers, including a “Charm Mini Figure” and “Bonbon Drop Seal.” A third bonus item — a pull-back car themed “Gokigen Siren♪” — began distribution on August 22.
The Fourth Anime Film of 2026 to Hit ¥10 Billion
With this achievement, Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu becomes the fourth anime film of 2026 to surpass the 10 billion yen threshold, following Zootopia 2 (opened December 5, 2025), Detective Conan: Highway’s Fallen Angel (April 10, 2026), and Toy Story 5 (July 3, 2026). The official account celebrated the milestone with a commemorative visual, thanking fans for their support and encouraging audiences to return to theaters for repeat viewings.
