Kyodo News reported on Friday that Izuru Narushima, an acclaimed Japanese film director and screenwriter, passed away from lung cancer on August 24. He was 65 years old.
Career and Background
Born in 1961 in Yamanashi Prefecture, Narushima began his career as a screenwriter in 1994 before making his directorial debut in 2004. His 2011 film Yōkame no Semi (Rebirth) became his landmark achievement, sweeping 10 awards at the 35th Japan Academy Prizes, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The Japan Academy Prize Association also noted that Narushima had previously received the Best Screenplay award at the 32nd ceremony for Climbers’ High, as well as multiple Outstanding Director awards for The Lone Scalpel, Cape Nostalgia, and Inochinoteishajō across subsequent ceremonies.
Anime Work
Narushima is remembered in the anime community for writing the screenplay for the 2000 animated film The Boy Who Saw the Wind.
Other Notable Films
His most recent directorial work was the 2023 live-action film Father of the Galactic Railroad, based on the life of Kenji Miyazawa, the author of the beloved novel Night on the Galactic Railroad. Other films he directed include Cape Nostalgia, Isoroku, Solomon’s Perjury, Midnight Eagle, and The Lone Scalpel.
The Japan Academy Prize Association posted its condolences on Friday, honoring his lasting contributions to Japanese cinema.
