A preview screening and talk event for the TV anime Hotaru no Yomeiri, based on the manga by Oreko Tachibana, was held on September 6 at United Cinema Toyosu in Tokyo. The three lead voice cast members — Lynn (Satoko Kirigaya), Koki Uchiyama (Shinpei Goto), and Kento Ito (Kotaro Ogawa) — took the stage for the occasion.
Kimono on Stage
In keeping with the series’ Japanese-dress aesthetic, all three cast members appeared in kimono. Lynn said she felt “truly honored to wear such a beautiful kimono,” while Uchiyama joked, “It makes me realize just how impressive it is that Shinpei can cut people down while wearing something this hard to move in.” Ito noted that although he has worn traditional dress at other events, doing so for Hotaru no Yomeiri carries a different, more meaningful weight.
Landing the Roles
Lynn revealed that her manager — a devoted fan of the original manga — had enthusiastically encouraged her to go after the role. “I threw myself into the audition with everything I had,” she said. “Getting cast as Satoko is genuinely one of the happiest things that’s happened to me, but the series has so many fans that I also feel a real sense of pressure.”
Uchiyama had previously voiced Shinpei in the voice-comic adaptation, but re-auditioned for the TV anime role. He laughed as he recalled the staff telling him he was a perfect fit: “I was a little conflicted, honestly — Shinpei is not exactly a good person. But as a performer, I’m absolutely thrilled.” Ito received similar praise from the staff for Kotaro, and teased that while Kotaro appears gentle on the surface, there is much more complexity to him that viewers should look forward to discovering.
Impressions After Watching Episodes 1–3
Following the preview screening of episodes 1 through 3, Lynn said she was captivated by how the series portrays both Shinpei’s unsettling intensity and his more endearing side. Uchiyama was surprised by the horror-movie atmosphere of Shinpei’s first appearance: “I had no idea the sound design would go in that direction during recording — it genuinely shocked me.” Ito added that the blood and violence in the early episodes are depicted with real impact, and praised the visual contrast between the cold color palette of episode 1 and the more vibrant hues that emerge by episode 3.
Lynn’s “Most Romantic Scene” Revealed
A highlight of the talk event was a guessing game in which Lynn had pre-selected what she considered the single most romantic moment from episodes 1–3, and Uchiyama and Ito tried to identify it. Uchiyama guessed a scene featuring Shinpei at the end of episode 3; Ito guessed an exchange between Satoko and Shinpei near the end of episode 2 — but both were wrong.
Lynn’s actual pick was a moment late in episode 2 in which Shinpei tells Satoko, “This heart already belongs to you.” She broke down her reasoning with enthusiasm: “First, he takes her somewhere she can see fireflies — that’s romantic moment number one. Then he lets her touch him — romantic moment number two. And then he just tells her straight out that he loves her — that’s the peak!” She admitted it was agonizing to choose just one scene, before summing up with a grin: “Bottom line — Shinpei is incredibly cool!”
About Hotaru no Yomeiri
Set during the Meiji era as Western civilization begins to transform Japan, Hotaru no Yomeiri follows Satoko, a young noblewoman who dreams of a respectable marriage that will make her father proud, and Shinpei, an assassin who is utterly devoted to her. The two enter a forbidden contract marriage; though Satoko initially feels nothing for the cold-blooded Shinpei, her feelings gradually shift as she comes to know him.
The TV anime will begin broadcasting on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block starting October 9.
