The live-action Blue Lock film has been on a remarkable run since its August 7 opening. Within just 19 days it had drawn 700,000 admissions and crossed the 1 billion yen mark in box-office revenue. By day 31, those figures had climbed to 830,000 admissions and 1.2 billion yen — and the momentum shows no sign of slowing.
Alongside standard screenings, the film is now also playing in 4DX, letting audiences experience the Egoist strikers’ battles with moving seats, vibrations, wind effects, and more. Having tried it firsthand, it’s safe to say the experience far exceeded expectations.
What Is Blue Lock?
For the uninitiated, Blue Lock is a hit soccer manga serialised in Weekly Shonen Magazine (Kodansha), written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. The story follows 300 high-school forwards gathered from across Japan and thrown into a brutal survival competition inside a facility called “Blue Lock,” with the goal of forging the world’s greatest striker to lead Japan to World Cup glory.
How Does the Live-Action Hold Up?
The first thing that hits you watching the live-action film is the sheer physicality of real performers. Actors colliding on the pitch carry a raw weight that animation simply cannot replicate, and the filmmakers layer in visual techniques to preserve the characters’ “ego” and their superhuman style of play. The Blue Lock essence comes through intact.
Kubota Masataka as Ego Jinpachi is a particular standout. His posture, gaze, and the cool, provocative cadence of his dialogue make you feel like the character has stepped straight off the page — not through imitation, but through genuine performance.
The Egoist trio also impresses: Takahashi Fumiya as Isagi Yoichi, Sakurai Kaito as Bachira Meguru, and K as Nagi Seishiro each bring their character’s distinct personality to life in ways that feel fresh while honouring the source material.
4DX: This Is Not a Movie, It’s an Attraction
To put it plainly: watching Blue Lock in 4DX is less like watching a film and more like being thrown into the match itself.
When play kicks off, the seat moves with the players. When they sprint, wind rushes past your face. When a tackle lands, the impact travels through the chair and into your body. The match that once existed safely behind the screen suddenly occupies the same space as you.
The highlight, though, is what can only be described as experiencing the ball’s perspective.
Every time a player strikes the ball, the seat lurches in kind. When Nagi shoots, you move. When Isagi shoots, you move. When Kunigami unleashes one of his thunderous efforts, the force arrives right where you’re sitting. In 4DX, you can be kicked by Nagi, by Isagi, by Kunigami — and the film makes that an unexpectedly joyful experience.
Scenes featuring the raw power of Kunigami and Baro are especially intense. The 4DX effects ramp up in proportion to the on-screen action, reaching a point where you can’t help but laugh at how violently the seat is moving — and grip the armrests to avoid feeling like you might actually be launched out of it.
The wind effects deserve special mention too. Throughout every sprint and dash, a steady breeze keeps you feeling like you’re running alongside the players, adding a layer of speed and immersion that the seat movements alone couldn’t achieve.
More Than Just a Repeat Viewing
Even for those who have already seen the standard version, the 4DX screening offers a completely different experience — one where your entire body participates in the match rather than just your eyes and ears.
You run with Isagi and the others, absorb the shock of every shot, and occasionally find yourself playing the role of the ball. There are even dormitory scenes that make you feel like you’re living alongside the characters inside Blue Lock itself.
At that point, it stops being a cinema trip and becomes something closer to a Blue Lock enrollment experience. If you have the chance, the 4DX version is absolutely worth feeling with your whole body.
