After more than four decades, Japanese audiences will finally get the chance to experience Transformers: The Movie (THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE) on the big screen. The iconic 1986 animated film has been confirmed for its first-ever Japanese theatrical release, opening Friday, November 27, 2026, at 30 Lawson United Cinema locations across the country.
A Long-Awaited Premiere
Produced on an unusually large scale and budget for its time, Transformers: The Movie originally opened in the United States in August 1986. Celebrated for its cutting-edge cel animation and sweeping scope, the film captivated fans worldwide — yet somehow never made it to Japanese cinemas, earning it a near-mythical status among domestic fans for the past 40 years.
A Landmark in Robot Anime and Toy History
The Transformers franchise was born from Japanese toys before evolving into a global entertainment phenomenon, and this film represents the pivotal moment of that transformation. It holds a significant place in both the history of robot anime and toy culture. The fateful showdown between Convoy (Optimus Prime) and Megatron, along with shocking twists involving major characters, has been talked about by fans around the world for 40 years as one of the most unforgettable moments in the franchise’s history.
The Sound of the ’80s
The film is also celebrated as a defining artifact of 1980s music culture. Stan Bush‘s iconic track “The Touch”, alongside a roster of hard-rock anthems, perfectly captures the MTV-era energy of the decade — and continues to resonate with fans to this day.
A Historic Screening Event
The theatrical run is being positioned as a historic occasion for fans of all generations — from those who grew up with Transformers through TV anime and toys in the ’80s, to newer fans of robot anime, hobby culture, and ’80s film and music. A newly illustrated commemorative visual has been created exclusively for this screening and will be used across a range of merchandise.
