A special stage greeting to mark the revival screening of original anime film Chou Kaguya-hime! (超かぐや姫！) was held on September 20 at Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro in Tokyo. Taking the stage after the screening were Natsuyoshi Yuko (voice of Kaguya), Nagase Anna (voice of Sakayori Ayaha), Hayami Saori (voice of Tsukimi Yachiyo), and director Yamashita Seigo.
A Revival That Refuses to Cool Down
The film originally premiered on Netflix in January before a theatrical run of roughly four months starting in February. A Blu-ray release followed on September 9, and from September 18, revival screenings began in both standard and premium formats including ULTRA 4DX and Dolby Atmos. Despite all that time having passed, the venue was packed with enthusiastic fans who responded to the cast’s signature calls — “Kaguyahho!”, “Iroppii!!”, and “Yaoyoroo!” — with thunderous cheers.
The crowd’s energy left director Yamashita visibly delighted. “It’s been over half a year, everyone. Isn’t that a little crazy? (laughs) I’m truly grateful!” he said with a grin.
A Bond That Only Grows Stronger
It had been a while since all three lead voice actors and the director had gathered together. Natsuyoshi shared that rewatching the film repeatedly had only deepened her attachment to everyone involved: “The feeling of being part of the ‘Kaguya team’ just keeps growing day by day.” Nagase said she had been watching Natsuyoshi and Hayami’s appearances on THE FIRST TAKE and NHK’s SCHOOL OF J-POP, adding that her life had been completely filled with Chou Kaguya-hime! ever since.
Hayami admitted that every time she finishes watching the film, she feels an urge to bow in gratitude to the director — and all three cast members promptly did exactly that on stage, bowing toward Yamashita in unison.
Premium Formats and Spinoff Manga
When asked which special screening format they were most curious about, Natsuyoshi chose 4DX and director Yamashita picked ULTRA 4DX. Nagase said she wanted to hear Kaguya and Yachiyo’s singing voices through Dolby Atmos, while Hayami encouraged fans to savour the a cappella opening of “Hoshi Furu Umi,” which begins with a single breath.
The group also touched on the spinoff manga Chou Kaguya Meshi! (超かぐやメシ！), for which director Yamashita handles the concept and plot. He revealed that the story is already planned quite far ahead, with the characters eating all sorts of food, and hinted, “I think they’ll be having pancakes at some point.”
Recording Cheers for the Online “Tsukuyomi Kansha-sai” Event
The latter half of the event was dedicated to a live call-and-response recording session, capturing audience cheers for use at the upcoming online event Tsukuyomi Kansha-sai (ツクヨミ感謝祭), scheduled for December. The roar of the crowd grew even louder during the recording than during the introductions, prompting the four on stage to exclaim “That was incredible!” and “You’re all so good at this!” Director Yamashita himself joined in the call-and-response, and the session became a joyful showcase of the bond between the film and its fans.
Wrapping up the event, Natsuyoshi expressed her gratitude: “Chou Kaguya-hime! started running at the beginning of this year, and to be loved by everyone throughout the whole year — I’m just filled with happiness.” Nagase confessed she got personally hyped up because she had never done a call-and-response before. Hayami closed with a heartfelt message to the audience: “The feelings in your voices came through so vividly — what a wonderful space this is. We’re only just getting started. Let’s walk the next 8,000 years together.”
