The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026 has revealed its anime selections across multiple program sections, ranging from highly anticipated new projects to celebrated past releases.

Animation Section

The Animation Section will present four anime films:

• Cherry and Virgin — an original anime film by director Masanao Kawajiri, set to open in 2027.
• ghost – end of night (ghost/yoru no hate) — a new theatrical anime project from director Shingo Natsume and Madhouse, opening in Japan on February 11, 2027.
• Grotesqqque (previously titled Grotesque) — an original anime film by director Atsushi Nishigori, opening in Japan on November 6.
• We Are Aliens (Ware Ware wa Uchūjin) — an anime film from NOTHING NEW, directed by Kōhei Kadowaki, opening in Japan on September 25.

Women Directors: Diverse Visions

The Women Directors: Diverse Visions section will screen three anime titles:

• Detective Conan: Fist of Blue Sapphire (Meitantei Conan: Konjō no Fist) — the 23rd Detective Conan film, which opened in Japan in April 2019. It sold 1,458,263 tickets and earned 1,886,292,700 yen (approx. US$16.85 million) in its opening three days, ultimately grossing 9.37 billion yen (approx. US$86.2 million) by the end of 2019 — the seventh consecutive Conan film to set a new franchise box-office record.
• Gold Kingdom and Water Kingdom (Kin no Kuni Mizu no Kuni) — based on Nao Iwamoto’s manga, the film opened in Japan in January 2023 and earned 85,896,750 yen (approx. US$659,000) over its opening weekend.
• The recent anime film adaptation of Riyoko Ikeda’s The Rose of Versailles manga, which opened in Japan in January 2025 and earned 108,158,300 yen (approx. US$704,200) in its first three days.

TIFFCOM 2026 Industry Seminars

The companion TIFFCOM 2026 industry event, held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center Hamamatsucho-Kan, will feature three anime-focused seminars:

• “Japanese Animation’s Global Expansion: 2025 Overseas Sales Update and Strategies from Two Studios” — featuring Kazuko Ishikawa (president, The Association of Japanese Animations / Nippon Animation), Megumi Onouchi (president, HumanMedia Inc. / vice chairman, The Association of Japanese Animations), Masahiro Hasegawa (editor-in-chief, Anime Industry Report, Senshu University), Hitomi Hiratsuka (director of international sales and productions, Nippon Animation), and Yōko Ueda (director of Corporate Administration and IP & Communications, Production I.G).
• “Anime Co-Production Conference, Anime’s New Frontier: Structuring & Financing International Co-Productions” — featuring Ervin Han (co-founder and CEO, Robot Playground Media), Taiki Sakurai (CEO, Salamander Inc.), Ilan Urroz (CEO, Foliascope), and Masao Kawano (program manager, Into Global).
• “Japan’s IP Frontier 2026: Beyond Broadcasting” — featuring representatives from TV TOKYO, YAMI inc., Fuji Television, San-in Chuo Television Broadcasting, Chukyo TV, Hokkaido Television Broadcasting, and the Broadcast Program Export Association of Japan (BEAJ).
