Several leading figures from Japan’s animation world — including Otomo Katsuhiro, Iwaisawa Kenji, and Yamamura Koji — have contributed comments praising the French animated feature film Marcel & Monsieur Pagnol.

About the Film

Marcel & Monsieur Pagnol is a feature-length animated film based on a true story, following French author Marcel Pagnol as he looks back on his boyhood and life. The film is directed by Sylvain Chomet, best known for The Triplets of Belleville. It is scheduled to open in Japan from November 6 onward.

Comments from the Industry

Otomo Katsuhiro

While the film tackles a classical theme — tracing one writer’s life through the turbulent era of Les Années Folles in France — its visuals actively embrace new forms of expression and technique. I was deeply impressed. It reminded me once again that Chomet is a filmmaker who never stops evolving.

Iwaisawa Kenji

The direction shifts with each era of Marcel’s life — something you might call pure “Chomet style.” The background art and the interplay of light and shadow that underpin the story conjure a genuine sense of catharsis.

Yamamura Koji

The stylized, deformed characters Chomet draws carry the spirit of the French caricature tradition, lending the film the air of a dignified biographical picture. Through extraordinary draftsmanship, figures from the past appear before us with a vivid sense of real existence.

Yamada Yoji

I was moved by the expressive power of animation that portrays one writer’s life with both respect and humor. And I’ll let you in on a secret — the idea for my own Tora-san films actually has its roots in the work of Marcel Pagnol.

Mimura Rie

“What matters is not your profession, but working diligently and creating something beautiful.” Just as the protagonist’s grandfather says, anyone who keeps striving earnestly at what lies before them is an artist. And in the pauses between, if you lift your gaze, a beautiful moment arrives — a connection to a world overflowing with light and color.

Shimao Maho

What guides you back to your truest feelings is the child you once were.
