Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine announced in its 49th issue that the Witch on the Holy Night (Mahōtsukai no Yoru) anime film will receive a manga adaptation drawn by Keigo Maki, best known for Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie. The manga will begin serialization in the magazine’s November 11 issue.

To mark the announcement, the publisher streamed a promotional commercial featuring the film’s lead voice cast: Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko Aozaki and Yūsuke Kobayashi as Soujyuro Sizuki.

Story

Set in the late 1980s, Witch on the Holy Night follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two sister heirs to a long lineage of modern mages. Despite her disinterest in magic, she is suddenly declared the heir to her family’s magical arts and reluctantly begins an apprenticeship under Alice Kuonji, a young witch living in a secluded hilltop manor. Aoko juggles her magical training with her duties as student council president, while also befriending Sōjūrō Shizuki, a transfer student with little familiarity with the modern world. She must also contend with the schemes of her older sister Tōko Aozaki, who believes her birthright has been stolen from her.

The Nasuverse Connection

Mahōtsukai no Yoru was one of the earliest collaborations between Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi, dating back to the mid-1990s — predating the founding of Type-Moon. Originally a novel shared only among friends, it was eventually developed into a full visual novel with graphics by Hirokazu Koyama, releasing in April 2012, with two sequels planned.

The story holds a notable place in the “Nasuverse” — the fan term for the shared universe spanning Type-Moon’s works, including Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. An older Aoko Aozaki serves as an early mentor to Tsukihime protagonist Shiki Tohno, while an older Tōko Aozaki appears as an employer to Garden of Sinners protagonist Shiki Ryōgi.

Film Opening and Game Releases

The Witch on the Holy Night film opens in Japan on November 20. A smartphone version of the original visual novel will also launch on the same day.

Type-Moon previously released the game on Steam in December 2023. Aniplex released the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions in the West in December 2022, simultaneously with the Japanese release. Combined sales of the PS4 and Switch versions have surpassed 150,000 copies worldwide.
