Otomate, the prominent women’s game brand, has announced MIX DUNK -KING OF BASKETBALL- for Nintendo Switch, launching on November 26, 2026. The standard edition — both physical and digital — is priced at 8,580 yen (tax included), while a digital deluxe download version and a special edition with bonus merchandise are available at 10,780 yen (tax included).
What sets this otome romance adventure apart is its unusual trio of collaborators: Otomate, professional basketball club Kawasaki Brave Thunders, and idol group AKB48 all served as supervisors, blending the authenticity of pro basketball with the emotional pull of a romance game.
Story: A Female Athlete Chasing Her Dream
The protagonist is a young woman who joins a company with a women’s basketball team in order to pursue her dream of becoming a professional player — only to have the team dissolved almost immediately after she starts. She then sets her sights on a tryout for the fictional co-ed “Mix League,” with the ultimate goal of joining the Kawasaki Brave Thunders roster.
Rather than playing a passive support role, the protagonist competes on the court alongside the male characters as a player in her own right, sharing in the team’s conflicts, training, and victories.
Romanceable Characters
- Shinoki Ito (CV: Sawashiro Chiharu) — A basketball-obsessed player who has devoted his entire life to the sport, hiding past setbacks beneath a provocative attitude.
- Kubota Itsuki (CV: Enoki Junya) — Cheerful and supportive, the natural mood-maker of the team.
- Kurano Glen (CV: Terashima Takuma) — Cool and reserved, with a surprising soft spot for curry.
- Jinno Keigo (CV: Nakashima Yoshiki) — The reliable, straightforward captain; a scene where he calls the coach out to an izakaya for a heart-to-heart is cited by the developers as a personal favourite.
- Nakai Yuya (CV: Sugita Tomokazu) — The assistant coach who quietly supports the protagonist; the coach-athlete dynamic makes the gradual closing of distance all the more compelling.
The Central Twist: In-Team Romance Is Forbidden
In a move that is almost perversely fitting for an otome game, the team operates under a strict no-romance rule. The developers explain that this rule keeps the story focused on trust and athletic growth first, making the feelings that inevitably surface feel far more charged and meaningful.
Accessible for Non-Basketball Fans
The game includes a basketball terminology reference feature and a mini-game in which players can attempt shots themselves, ensuring that no prior knowledge of the sport is required to enjoy the experience.
Developer Interview: Otomate
Origins of the Project
The project began when Kawasaki Brave Thunders approached Otomate directly. The team felt that making the protagonist a mere bystander would be a waste, so they conceived the fictional Mix League to let her compete alongside the male characters — something only possible in a game. AKB48 joined around the same time, with members who had basketball experience contributing to the supervision.
Balancing Realism and Fiction
The physical differences inherent in a mixed-gender team are addressed in the story: the team struggles to gel at first and must find its own solutions rather than simply following the coach’s instructions. The dormitory setup — separate men’s and women’s dorms sharing a single canteen — was designed to create natural opportunities for the characters to interact in everyday life, while the finer details of dorm life are treated as fiction.
Supervision by Kawasaki Brave Thunders
The development team made multiple visits to the club’s facilities, including restricted areas. The Brave Thunders praised the accuracy of the in-game backgrounds, and reviewed every match scene for rule compliance. One particularly memorable moment: the club flagged a line in the opening song that could be interpreted as condoning player errors — a level of scrutiny the developers had not anticipated.
Voice Recording Highlights
The developers singled out several standout performances: the argument between Ito and the protagonist; Itsuki’s walk home after a team celebration; Glen’s painful rejection of the protagonist; Keigo’s izakaya scene with the coach, which perfectly captured his earnest personality; and a scene in which Yuya falls ill, with Sugita Tomokazu conveying a rare vulnerability that left a strong impression.
Interview: Kawasaki Brave Thunders
Representatives from the Brave Thunders expressed surprise at how faithfully the game reproduced their arena and practice facilities — right down to the squeak of basketball shoes on the court and the crowd chants during matches. The arena MC role was filled by Ichikawa Taichi, who actually serves as assistant MC at the club’s home games, adding an extra layer of authenticity.
The club hopes players will come to appreciate the importance of trust and connection in basketball — illustrated by concepts like the no-look pass, which succeeds precisely because teammates believe in each other — and ultimately be inspired to attend a real game.
Interview: AKB48
Hotei Momoka, who supervised the project on behalf of AKB48, said she was involved in reviewing character settings and visuals, and found it deeply rewarding to watch the characters take shape. She encouraged fans to enjoy the novel combination of basketball and romance.
Omori Maho (former AKB48 member) added that the three-way collaboration between Otomate, the Brave Thunders, and AKB48 has produced a women’s romance game unlike anything that has come before, and that she herself is looking forward to playing it.
