The Code Geass franchise is gearing up for its next chapter with Code Geass: Hoshi Oi no Aspal (Code Geass: Star-Chaser Aspal), confirmed for event screenings in 2027. The announcement comes with the unveiling of the main visual, key staff, lead cast members, and the first look at the story’s setting.
A Franchise That Has Spanned Two Decades
Code Geass first captivated audiences with Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion in 2006 and its sequel R2 in 2008. The franchise has since expanded across multiple formats: the OVA spinoff Code Geass: Akito the Exiled screened theatrically between 2012 and 2016; a three-part theatrical compilation of the TV series ran from 2017 to 2018; and the fully original film Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection opened in February 2019, surpassing one billion yen at the box office.
Most recently, Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture — set after Re;surrection — was presented in four parts via event screenings and simultaneous global streaming on Disney+ starting in May 2024, with a television broadcast run beginning in July 2026.
Announced at the 20th Anniversary Event
Code Geass: Hoshi Oi no Aspal was first announced at the Code Geass Project “To 20th” Event in December 2025. Director Kazuya Nomura, series composition writer Mado Nozaki, character designer Rorua, and animation studio Sunrise were attached to the project from the outset.
Story: A Slave Boy in the Roman Empire
The series is set in the Roman Empire in Divine Calendar year 606, a time when citizens suffer under the tyrannical rule of Emperor Phocas and a string of wars against neighboring nations. In the imperial city of Neapolis, a slave boy named Aspal — who carries no memories of his past — encounters a mysterious woman named Zoe, who somehow lives with only her head. That fateful meeting sets a brand-new Code Geass story in motion.
Alongside the story details, visuals for both lead characters were revealed, as well as the first look at a new type of mech called the “Agalmata,” with the unit Chronos being the first shown.

Comments from Staff and Cast
Kazuya Nomura (Director): “I still remember how surprised I was when I received this offer. While keenly feeling the difficulty of building an entirely new world from scratch, I have been seriously grappling with the big theme of ‘What is happiness?’ through the protagonist Aspal. I hope you will follow his journey all the way to the end to see what he finds beyond the turbulence.”
Mado Nozaki (Series Composition): “Every day spent weaving the world of Code Geass: Hoshi Oi no Aspal has been a true adventure — venturing into places unknown, searching for something important that may or may not exist. Aspal has always been by my side on that journey. I am still adventuring with everything I have, so that I can deliver everything he encounters without leaving a single thing out.”
Aiban Shibata (Voice of Aspal): “More than anything, I simply couldn’t believe it. Even after being told I had been cast, the reality didn’t sink in for quite some time — not until I held the script in my hands and saw my own name on the page. I’ve thought long and hard about how to portray Aspal and the turbulent life he has lived and will live, and I pour into every performance the wish that he will find his own form of happiness in the end.”
Hibiki Yamamura (Voice of Zoe): “When I first saw Zoe’s character art, I was struck by how divine and beautiful she looked — a single illustration that pulled me completely into the world. I am overjoyed to have been chosen to voice such a captivating character, and at the same time I feel a thrilling sense of resolve to carry her soul with everything I have.”
