May 29 is celebrated each year as “Happiness Day” in Japan, a wordplay on “Kofuku (幸福).” For this occasion, a well-known anime news outlet held a poll asking readers: “Which anime character do you most want to have the greatest happiness?” Responses were collected from May 16–22, 2026, with a total of 347 replies — approximately 55% male and 45% female. By age group, around 25% were 19 or younger and 45% were in their 30s.
⚠️ This article contains major spoilers for several series. Please read with that in mind.
No. 1 — Haibara Ai from Detective Conan (名探偵コナン)
Haibara Ai claims the top spot with approximately 6% of the vote — defending her championship for the second consecutive year.
She was once a scientist for the shadowy organization under the alias “Sherry,” who went on the run after losing her older sister, and whose body was shrunk back to that of a child by the side-effects of drug APTX4869. She currently lives under the care of Dr. Agasa.
Fans shared thoughts such as: “She has been growing up all this time under the watchful eye of the organization, been spirited away to foreign countries, and had to carry the grief of losing her family entirely on her own — please let her be happy someday” and “She once resolved herself to die, yet she survived; now she lives quietly alongside Conan and her friends — I want the day the organization finally collapses to come soon, so she can smile freely as an ordinary girl.”
No. 2 — Gojo Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen (呪術廻戦)
Gojo Satoru, the jujutsu high school teacher from Tokyo, jumps to No. 2 with roughly 5% of the vote, up from No. 8 in the previous year.
Though he is the strongest sorcerer of the modern era, in his school years he had to endure the painful loss of a close friend. Fans expressed sentiments such as: “Because he is the strongest, he has had to shoulder everything alone all along — I want him to be freed from that burden and to find happiness surrounded by his friends and students” and noted ongoing interest from fans tracking Season 3’s Death Painting Arc regarding his potential revival.
No. 3 — Mouri Ran from Detective Conan (名探偵コナン)
Mouri Ran, childhood friend of Kudou Shinichi, climbs to No. 3 with approximately 2%, up from No. 8 the previous year.
She faithfully waits for Shinichi’s return — even as he vanishes so abruptly. Fans noted: “She loves Shinichi with all her heart, yet never shows him her sadness because she doesn’t want to worry him — the strength concealing that pain is admirable” and “The time she has genuinely been with Shinichi is only a brief moment, when he took the antidote temporarily — I hope the day everything is finally resolved comes soon.”
