April 27 is observed every year as “Women Police Officers Day” in Japan, because the country’s first female police officers began serving at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department on that date in 1946. To mark the occasion, Anime! Anime! held a reader poll asking, “Which police character in anime comes to mind first?” Voting was open from April 20 to 22, 2026, with 67 respondents. About 40% were male and 60% were female. The main age groups were 19 or younger and people in their 20s, each accounting for about 30%.
No. 1 — Kankichi Ryotsu from Kochikame (こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所)
Taking first place with about 12% of the vote was Kankichi Ryotsu (両津勘吉), the troublemaking police officer at the local box in Kochikame. He is beloved as a police officer who does whatever he wants, yet deep down has a gentle heart and understands children well. Many voters praised his broad knowledge of games and models, as well as his habit of chasing money only to end up broke every time, a distinctive part of his charm.
The year 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the original manga and the 30th anniversary of the TV anime. On top of that, a new anime project titled Shin Kochikame (新こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所) has been announced, leaving fans eager to see what trouble Ryo-san will cause next.
No. 2 — Rei Furuya, also known as Toru Amuro, from Detective Conan
Rei Furuya (降谷零), also known as Toru Amuro, the private detective, ranked second. He is an officer in the Public Security Police who infiltrates the Black Organization as the spy codenamed “Bourbon.” His unwavering commitment to dangerous missions, as well as the way he carries on after losing his police academy friends, has made him enormously popular.
In addition to Rei Furuya, several other police characters from Detective Conan also ranked, including Inspector Megure, praised for his sense of responsibility in many films, and Wataru Takagi, who may seem unreliable at times but is loved for his kindness and approachability.
No. 3 Tie — Toshiro Hijikata from Gintama and Sadamune Nisuji-hi from Touken Ranbu ONLINE
Third place was a tie between two characters from different series.
Toshiro Hijikata (土方十四郎), the vice commander of Edo’s peacekeeping Shinsengumi in Gintama, earned praise for his strong principles and cool personality, which contrasts with his comedic side, including his fear of ghosts, his status as a “mayonnaise maniac,” and his constant quarrels with Okita.
Sadamune Nisuji-hi (二筋樋貞宗) is a Touken Danshi, a sword-inspired character, from the game Touken Ranbu ONLINE. He is based on an uchigatana by the Sagami swordsmith Sadamune that was once a treasure of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The character was added to the game only this year but quickly entered the ranking. Voters liked his personality and police-flavored lines, such as “I am Sadamune Nisuji-hi, newly transferred here,” as well as the way he calls himself a “sword police officer.”
