AnimeJapan has officially announced that it will open entry submissions for the “AnimeJapan New Creator Awards 2027” from October 1 through February 6, 2027. Now in its second year, the competition is designed to discover and nurture emerging creative talent in the anime industry.

Eligibility and Entry Requirements

The competition is open to students currently enrolled at educational institutions in Japan. Eligible entries are short films of approximately 15 minutes or less, including opening and ending credits. Winning works will be made available to anime fans around the world via domestic and international streaming platforms.

Prizes and Awards

  • Grand Prix — 1,000,000 yen (approx. US$6,419)
  • Crunchyroll Award — a scholarship of 1,000,000 yen
  • Four Category Awards — 300,000 yen each (approx. US$1,925) in the areas of technical application, direction, character design, and art
  • AnimeJapan Special Award — the winner will have the opportunity to showcase their short film at domestic and international anime conventions, and receive a seminar conducted by active industry creators at the winner’s school

The judging panel will be the AnimeJapan Executive Committee, representing 22 anime companies and one organization. Winners will be announced during the public days of AnimeJapan 2027, either on March 27 or 28.

Background

AnimeJapan and Crunchyroll jointly launched the New Creator Awards in Japan in 2025. The inaugural winners were announced at the event this past March.

AnimeJapan 2027 Heads to Osaka for the First Time

AnimeJapan 2027 will be held at the Intex Osaka convention center in Osaka from March 26–28, 2027. Business days are scheduled for March 26–27, while public days will run March 27–28, with March 27 serving as an overlap day for both audiences.

This marks the first time the event will be held outside of Tokyo — it has historically taken place at Tokyo Big Sight, with the exception of 2021 when it was held online. The event is also confirmed to return to Osaka in 2028.

AnimeJapan 2026 Sets Attendance Record

AnimeJapan 2026, held March 28–31, drew a record 156,000 attendees across its two public days (March 28–29), surpassing the previous high of 152,400 from the year before.
