Aniplex announced on Monday that it will serve as the publisher for Fate/Extra Record, the remake of Marvelous Entertainment’s original Fate/Extra PlayStation Portable game, developed by Type-Moon studio BB. Alongside the announcement, Aniplex launched a new official website and X (formerly Twitter) account for the title.
Kazuya Nino Leaves Type-Moon Studio BB
Also on Monday, Kazuya Nino — the game’s director and planner, and the head of Type-Moon studio BB — announced via his personal X account that he is leaving Type-Moon studio BB for personal reasons. He has also stepped down from his roles as director and planner on Fate/Extra Record, and stated that he will be taking a break from game development due to current health concerns. Nino previously served as producer on the original Fate/Extra and also worked on the first Etrian Odyssey game.
Background: Publisher Change and Delays
Fate/Extra Record had already been delayed indefinitely after Notes — the official corporate entity of the Type-Moon creative circle — and Bandai Namco Entertainment reached a mutual agreement for Bandai Namco to withdraw from publishing the game. Type-Moon stated at the time that development would continue, but that the game’s development structure would undergo changes.
Type-Moon studio BB first announced the game in July 2020 to mark the 10th anniversary of the original Fate/Extra.
Platforms and Staff
The game had been scheduled for a spring release this year following a prior delay from a 2025 window. It is planned for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. Monday’s announcement from Aniplex additionally confirmed the game will also launch on Nintendo Switch 2. Arco Wada returns as character designer.
Fate/Extra Series History
Marvelous Entertainment and Type-Moon originally released Fate/Extra on the PSP in Japan in 2010, with Aksys Games bringing it to North America in November 2011. The companion title Fate/Extra CCC followed on PSP in Japan in March 2013. Both games are set in an alternate science-fiction continuity of Type-Moon’s Fate universe, commonly known among fans as the “Extraverse.”
The series inspired a 10-episode television anime, Fate/Extra Last Encore, produced by SHAFT, which premiered in January 2018. Netflix began streaming the series outside Japan in June 2018, followed by the three-episode special Fate/Extra Last Encore: Illustrias Tendōsetsu in July 2018.
On the gaming side, Marvelous released Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star for PS4 and PS Vita in Japan in November 2016; XSEED Games published it in the West in January 2017 and on PC and Switch in July 2017. The enhanced follow-up Fate/EXTELLA LINK launched in Japan in June 2018, with XSEED releasing it in the West in March 2019. Most recently, Koei Tecmo launched the action RPG Fate/Samurai Remnant in September 2023, available worldwide on PS5, PS4, PC via Steam, and Switch.
