More Character Trailers on the Way
TOHO animation has scheduled two additional character videos over the following days: one for the Kaja Troupe on October 13, and another for Ruo Qing and Yi Shan on October 14 (romanizations unconfirmed).
Film Synopsis
The film follows Maomao and Jinshi as they travel to the hometown of a concubine who died five years earlier in the imperial harem, tasked with returning her remains to her homeland. Along the way, they encounter pirates, hidden treasures, the secret surrounding the Empress’ remains, and a mysterious boy who holds the key to the entire story.
The screenplay is an entirely original story penned by the light novel series’ author, Hyuganatsu.
Release & Distribution
The film is set to open in Japanese theaters on December 11. On the international front, Crunchyroll announced on Thursday that it has acquired North American and worldwide rights to the film — excluding Asia but including India — in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment. A specific release date outside Japan will be announced at a later time.
About the Series
The film is based on Hyuganatsu and Touko Shino’s The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) light novel series, which began serialization on the “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” website in October 2011 before receiving a print edition with illustrations by Shino from Shufunotomo in August 2014. A manga adaptation by Nekokurage has been running in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan since May 2017.
The TV anime’s third season premiered on October 2 in NTV’s “Friday Anime Night” block, with its second cour scheduled for April 2027. Crunchyroll streams both previous seasons, including English dubs.
