Fans of Chiikawa (ちいかわ) have a new destination to mark on their maps: Chiikawa Mogu Mogu Honpo Otaru is set to open on Saturday, July 18, 2026, in Otaru, Hokkaido, bringing with it a lineup of region-exclusive merchandise inspired by the charm of northern Japan.
About Chiikawa
Chiikawa is a manga series by illustrator Nagano, originally launched on X (formerly Twitter). It follows the earnest little creature Chiikawa and friends Hachiware and Usagi through days that are equal parts fun, bittersweet, and surprisingly tough. The series has expanded into merchandise, collaboration cafés, and corporate tie-ins, with the manga published by Kodansha now up to eight volumes. A TV anime has been airing within Mezamashi TV on Fuji TV since April 2022, and the feature film Chiikawa: Secrets of the Mermaid Island is scheduled for release on July 24, 2026.
Otaru-Exclusive Goods
The Otaru store’s merchandise leans into the city’s distinctive retro atmosphere and Hokkaido’s regional identity. Highlights include:
- “I Turned into a Shima Enaga!” Plushies — Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi each dressed as the beloved round white bird native to Hokkaido, available in three versions.
- Retro Costume Mascots — the characters decked out in Otaru-inspired outfits.
- Butter Candy (バター飴) — a Hokkaido souvenir staple; the packaging doubles as a placemat or tapestry once opened.
- Lavender Japanese Black Tea — a mild, gently sweet domestic tea with a hint of lavender, packaged in a retro-cute tin.
- Metal Charm Keychains — featuring a vibrant stained-glass-style design.
- Additional items: konpeitō sugar candy in decorative cases, collectible pin badges, mini frame magnets, canvas magnets, character photo sticks, and tabi socks.
Trading Items & Capsule Badges
Two trading acrylic stand sets will also be available: the “Shima Enaga Round Acrylic Stand” featuring wobbling characters, and the “Stained Glass Sea Acrylic Stand” with an ocean-themed design. A capsule series, the “Hokkaido Soft Cream Matte Can Badge in Capsule”, depicts Chiikawa and friends happily licking soft-serve ice cream in retro-style designs.
