The official website for the anime film Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island) began streaming a new teaser trailer on Monday, revealing additional cast members and the film’s opening theme song.
Opening Theme and Insert Song
The opening theme is titled “Kutsuzure” (shoe rub) and is performed by Makoto Tanaka, the child actor who voices Hachiware. The lyrics were written by Nagano, creator of the original series. The trailer also features the song “Shima no Uta” (Song of the Island).
Additional Cast Announced
The latest trailer reveals new cast information for the film, expanding from the existing TV anime cast: Haruka Aoki voices protagonist Chiikawa, Makoto Tanaka voices Hachiware, and Ari Ozawa voices Usagi.
Film Story
The story begins as Chiikawa and Hachiware are relaxing peacefully, until a rabbit runs up with a flyer stuck to its face. Hachiware picks up the flyer and reads an “invitation to a special island”, which promises generous rewards for easy hunting on the island, as well as exclusive island ramen and sweets for almost no cost. Chiikawa and friends decide to set off, while Rakko, suspicious of the flyer, follows them. What awaits them on the island?
The film adapts an arc from the manga posted on X (formerly Twitter) between March and November 2023, known among fans as the “Siren Arc” or “Island Arc.”
Production Staff
Nagano handles the original story and also wrote the film’s screenplay. Under Nagano’s supervision, Kei Oikawa (director of all three seasons of Uma Musume Pretty Derby, Hinamatsuri, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!, and Climax) directs at Cygames Pictures. QTORY inc. manages production, and TOHO is distributing the film.

Basic Chiikawa Information
Nagano began publishing the manga on X under the title Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu in January 2020. The TV anime began airing in April 2022 on Fuji TV’s Mezamashi Terebi program every Friday, then expanded to twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, in April 2023. Overseas, Sentai Filmworks licensed the series and streams it on HIDIVE with English subtitles.
The newest series began airing in July 2025, following a period in which the program rebroadcast important older episodes after the previous series stopped airing new episodes in April 2025.
