The Netflix anime film 「超かぐや姫!」(Cho Kaguya-hime!), which became a phenomenon with a theatrical run lasting more than four months, has officially announced that it will end its nationwide Japanese theatrical run, except at some theaters, on June 18, 2026 (Thursday). The following day, a special “最後のファンサだ!” 卒業記念舞台挨拶 farewell stage greeting will be held to send off the journey in style.

From One Week to a Four-Month Phenomenon

Cho Kaguya-hime! is the feature-length directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita (山下清悟), known for opening animation work on titles such as Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura. The original anime film streams worldwide on Netflix.

The film first opened in theaters on February 20, 2026, for only one week at 19 theaters. However, the response from fans who wanted to experience it on a large screen with surround sound was so strong that the film ranked No. 5 on that week’s box office chart, a rare achievement for a work screening alongside a streaming platform release.

Due to requests from fans and theaters alike, the organizers continued extending the run and expanding the number of theaters. The film has now surpassed 2.5 billion yen in total box office revenue and is still screening nationwide.

Director Shingo Yamashita’s Message to Fans

“When the limited one-week screening began, I never expected it to become such a long run. This is all thanks to cooperation from theaters across the country and, of course, every fan who supported us. There is not much time left, so please experience the story of Kaguya and her friends, which can only be found in theaters!”

Farewell Stage Greeting “最後のファンサだ!” on June 19

One day after the theatrical run ends, on June 19, 2026 (Friday), two special stage greeting sessions will be held at two venues:

  • Cinecitta – 5:30 p.m. session, before the screening
  • Cinema City – 6:20 p.m. session, after the screening

The guests appearing on stage will include:

  • Yuko Natsuyoshi (夏吉ゆうこ) – voice of Kaguya
  • Saori Hayami (早見沙織) – voice of Tsukimi Yachiyo
  • Shingo Yamashita – director

The Cinema City event will be livestreamed on the film’s official YouTube channel, allowing fans nationwide to join the farewell. The team has also hinted that there may be a special announcement during the event.

Tickets cost 2,500 yen and will go on sale through each theater’s website from June 5, 2026 at 9:00 p.m.

Last Chance Before the Curtain Falls

Only about three weeks remain, making this the final opportunity for anyone who has not yet seen the film in theaters. Those who have already watched it still have time to return for one last “party” with Kaguya and her friends on the big screen.
