The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Sentinel 6, an “Afro-Futurist sci-fi adventure anime,” is moving forward with Michael Carter-Williams (former NBA player) and Jamaal Williams (NFL player) serving as executive producers. The project will be led by Creative Freaks, a Kyoto-based background art studio that is stepping into full animation production for the first time.
Though Creative Freaks has never previously received an animation production credit, the studio has contributed background art to a wide range of prominent titles, including Spy×Family, Synduality: Noir, Ya Boy Kongming!, Chainsaw Man, multiple entries in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise, Kaiju No. 8 Season 2, and Dragon Ball Daima, among many others. Founded in 2014, the studio launched its own animation production division in 2023. In addition to its Kyoto headquarters, Creative Freaks operates offices in Tokyo (home to its animation division), Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project was pitched to more than two dozen animation studios this year before Creative Freaks won the bid.
Origins of the Franchise
Sentinel 6 was created in 2019 by Jamaican-American writer Pat Stout and the late Asa Palmer through their production company Sable Kudzu Entertainment LLC. Palmer passed away in 2025; following his death, Carter-Williams and Williams fully funded the pilot episode.
Sable Kudzu Entertainment had previously launched a Kickstarter campaign in December 2021 to fund a trailer for the project, setting a goal of US$15,000. The campaign exceeded its target, raising US$18,706 by January 2022. The resulting trailer was released in December 2022, animated by Bulgaria- and Germany-based Chase A Cloud Studio.
Story
Set on a post-war Earth ravaged by an invasion of intergalactic terrorists, Sentinel 6 centers on the aftermath of “The Great Phoenix War,” a conflict that nearly destroyed the planet and wiped out the entire Zeronian Race — save for one extraordinarily powerful child.
429 years later, Earth has rebuilt itself, only to face a new threat from that very child, now known as Krath Mudaak. In response, the planet’s spiritual energy fractures and imbues itself into six warriors across the globe — the Sentinel 6 — each wielding one of six powers: Mind, Heart, Hands, Feet, Sword, and Shield.
The story follows Saint Dubois, a gifted student-athlete on the verge of joining the prestigious Blik program. His plans are upended when Ranē Bogle recruits him at the last minute, forcing him to compete against the formidable Ali Washington for the position of Lead Stryker. As they travel the world alongside Ranē, the group encounters Kalani Walker, Chafalumisa, and Zhu Sianing. Under the guidance of Sankofa — an Earth resident of over 600 years — the six come to understand their shared destiny: to unite and defeat Krath Mudaak before he destroys Earth and the galaxy.
