Crunchyroll has added an English dub for Saga of Tanya the Evil the Movie (Yōjo Senki Gekijō-ban) to its streaming library. The platform originally began streaming the film — in subtitled form — back in September 2019.
Story Synopsis
Set in UC 1926, the film follows the Imperial Army’s 203rd Air Mage Battalion, commanded by Major Tanya Degurechaff, fresh off a victory against the Republic’s remnant forces in the south. Expecting a well-earned vacation upon their return, the battalion instead receives urgent special orders from Staff HQ: there are signs of a large-scale military deployment near the Empire-Federation border.
Faced with a powerful new enemy, the desperate Empire stokes the fires of war once more. Simultaneously, an international volunteer army led by the Commonwealth enters Federation territory — operating on the principle that the enemy of an enemy is a friend. Among their ranks is a young girl named Warrant Officer Mary Sue, who has taken up arms seeking justice for her father, killed by the Empire.
Theatrical and Streaming History
The film opened in Japan in February 2019. Prior to its streaming debut, Crunchyroll screened it in more than 500 theaters across the United States in May 2019.
Last month, Crunchyroll also added an English dub for the The Saga of Tanya the Evil: Operation Desert Pasta special — a 17-minute short that first debuted during a franchise livestreamed event in June 2021, with Crunchyroll adding it to its library that same month.
The Broader Franchise
The first television anime season premiered in January 2017, with Crunchyroll streaming it simulcast and Funimation providing the English dub stream. The second season, Saga of Tanya the Evil II (Yōjo Senki II), began airing on the AT-X channel on July 8, and Crunchyroll is streaming an English dub for that season as well.
