Crunchyroll has added an English dub of the Gunma-chan anime to its platform. Voice actress Shakyra Dunn confirmed via her X/Twitter account that she provides the voices for several characters, including Buchi, Francoise, and Meemi’s Mom, among others.
About the Anime
The series is based on the official mascot of Gunma Prefecture in Japan. The current pony mascot first debuted as “Yūma-chan” for a sports competition in 1994, before being officially adopted as the prefecture’s Gunma-chan mascot in 2008, replacing an earlier Gunma-chan design that had been in use since the 1980s.
Staff and Japanese Cast
The anime is directed and written by Mitsuru Hongō, known for his work on Ascendance of a Bookworm, Outlaw Star, World Trigger, and Deltora Quest. It is produced by studio Ascension, previously known for Dino Girl Gauko.
- Karin Takahashi voices the titular protagonist, Gunma-chan
- Aya Uchida voices Aoma, one of Gunma-chan’s friends
- Yui Ogura voices Mimi, another of Gunma-chan’s friends
Broadcast History
The first season premiered in October 2021 on Tokyo MX, TV Kanagawa, TV Saitama, Chiba TV, Gunma TV, Tochigi TV, Sun TV, and KBS Kyoto. It ran for 39 episodes, each approximately seven minutes long, airing three episodes at a time — a format similar to how the long-running Sazae-san anime airs. The season concluded in December 2021.
Gunma Prefecture had previously announced plans to stream the anime worldwide with Japanese audio and subtitles in English, French, and Chinese following the television broadcast.
The second season premiered in April 2023, with the main cast and staff returning at studio Ascension.
Both seasons of Gunma-chan are now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
