Crunchyroll has announced it will distribute Makoto Shinkai‘s next feature film across most of the world, with the notable exception of the majority of Asia. The streaming and distribution giant has not yet disclosed any details about the project, including its title.
Shinkai Confirms a New Film Is in the Works
In November 2025, Shinkai took to social media to confirm he has been working on a “new film” alongside “dependable companions,” while noting that he was not yet in a position to make a formal announcement about the project.
Building on the Success of Suzume
This is not the first time Crunchyroll has partnered with Shinkai on a theatrical release. The studio previously distributed Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari), which opened at number one at the Japanese box office in November 2022 before arriving in North America in April 2023. Crunchyroll screened the film both in Japanese with English subtitles and in an English dub.
Suzume debuted to $5,001,705 in its opening weekend in the United States and ultimately crossed the $10 million mark domestically. Its Japanese theatrical run concluded in May 2023 after earning ¥14.79 billion (approximately US$105.3 million). According to Box Office Mojo, the film’s total worldwide gross stands at $221,184,739. Crunchyroll continues to stream the film on its platform.
