The theme song is titled “Taga Tame ni” (For Whom) and is performed by Kyoko, lead vocalist of the rock band Barbee Boys. The song was originally used in the 1979 TV anime, where it was performed by Ken Narita and Koorogi ’73, with Ishinomori himself writing the lyrics.

Origins of Cyborg 009

The original Cyborg 009 manga began serialization in Shotengahosha’s Weekly King magazine in July 1964. The story involves a villainous organization called Black Ghost, which seeks to keep the world perpetually at war by abducting men and women from around the globe and surgically transforming them into cyborg soldiers — but all nine cyborgs eventually rise up to resist and fight back against Black Ghost.

The manga has been adapted into TV anime in 1968, 1979, and 2001, along with theatrical films in 1966, 1967, and 1980. More recent productions include 009 Re:Cyborg (2012), Cyborg 009 Call of Justice (2016), and a crossover OVA with Devilman in 2015.

There is also a spin-off manga, Cyborg 009 Bgooparts Delete by Tsuguo Okazaki, which ran from 2019 to September 2022. Most recently, a new manga titled Cyborg 009 Taiheyo no Borei (Cyborg 009: Ghost of the Pacific) by scriptwriter Masaki Tsuji and artist Masato Hayase has also launched.
